UK SALES CERTIFICATIONS:
(they are quite different in the USA... you need much more)

NOTE: you will see several SILVER and GOLD awards given on the same day. That's because the record
company must submit the verified sales details and when it is obvious that a recording is going to
go GOLD, they wait and submit both at the same time. Awards are always announced on Fridays.

NOTE: you will notice that Five's other two #1 singles, We Will Rock You and Let's Dance did not
receive sales awards. That's because by the year 2000, single sales were falling off rapidly in the
UK and most people preferred buying albums. So even having a single #1 for several weeks didn't
always mean you would get a sales award. Current weekly sales averages for a #1 single are between
15-30,000 copies... so even 4 weeks as #1 would mean at most 120,000 copies. There are always a few
singles each year in the UK that are so huge, they make GOLD easily.
